Age checks and your pictures
Updated 4 October 2026 · Adelaide, South Australia · Adults 18+
I Can Wait is for adults aged 18 or older. A camera or age estimate can make mistakes and does not prove someone is safe.
The current process
- Complete a camera challenge. Cloudflare Workers AI processes the challenge photographs.
- You can skip the AI age estimate. When used, it can approve only an apparent-age range starting at 25 or older, no wider than 15 years, with additional image checks. This is an estimate, not verified date of birth.
- Other passing camera attempts go to a human reviewer. Picture-only approval requires the reviewer to judge you clearly 25 or older and a qualifying AI range with a lower bound at least 18 and upper bound at least 25.
- If more evidence is needed, the reviewer can request a licence photograph through the app, or arrange an in-person check or a live video call on Google Meet. Never email ID. Only upload when the app asks; cover unrelated details where possible. A licence photo is not checked against government records.
Help with a check
The camera check asks you to turn your head and smile. If you can't use it, press "I can't use the camera check" on the camera screen. Choose the option that fits (you don't need to tell us why) and add a note if you like. A person emails you within 2 business days to arrange another way to check your age: in person, or on a live video call on Google Meet, where they look at your original photo ID and do not keep a copy. The link for the call comes by email from our admin address, and the call is not recorded. If you would rather, you can upload a photo of your licence in the app when they ask, and they compare it with you on a call or in person. A licence photo is never the only way. Never email ID. Only our admins, who check ages, see the option you chose and your note, and both are deleted when your age check is decided. Do not submit someone else’s evidence. Access requiring adult approval remains closed until eligibility is established.
Storage and deletion
Pictures needed for review are stored privately, separately from the account database. Reviewers can access them for the check. The app removes them when a decision is completed, when replaced or when the account is deleted. Undecided review pictures are scheduled for removal after 14 days; storage has a 15-day expiry backstop. Cleanup can be delayed by service failures, so we do not promise instantaneous deletion.
The account retains the review outcome, method and time. For an AI pass, it keeps only that you passed, the method and the date: the estimated range is deleted once your check is decided. I Can Wait does not extract and store your licence number or date of birth as separate account fields. The uploaded image itself contains whatever details you leave visible until it is removed. See Privacy for providers and remaining retention limits.
We keep a log of each time an admin opens these pictures, each age-check decision and each deletion of the pictures. It never holds a picture, an ID number or message text. The entries for opening a check's pictures and for its decision are deleted when the check is decided (the pictures and who opened them straight away, the decision's entry within a day); the decision itself (outcome, method, date and reviewer reference) stays on the account. Other entries are deleted 2 years after the end of the calendar year in which they were written. After an account is deleted, the log names the member only by an internal id. Only our admins can open the log; you can ask us for the entries about you.
Underage or incorrect decisions
Report a suspected underage account in the app or by email. A reviewer can revoke approval and suspend access. You may appeal an incorrect decision.
